The future of vision gets lighter: IXI unveils 22g smart glasses prototype

  • IXI reveals the world’s lightest smart eyewear, with their newest prototype weighing just 22 grams, including all embedded electronics, setting a new benchmark for wearable technology.
  • Alongside the ultra-light frame, IXI introduces its true-fit frame architecture, with customisation at the temples, nose piece, and pantoscopic tilt. This level of comfort and adaptability has never been achieved in smart eyewear, where consumers have been forced to compromise.
  • The design breakthrough follows IXI’s recently announced European production partnerships, preparing the company to scale its liquid crystal autofocus lenses ahead of market launch.

[Espoo, Finland, 18th November] - IXI, the company behind the world’s first autofocus glasses, announces a new design milestone in smart eyewear: a 22-gram prototype frame (lenses excluded) with all embedded electronics. This breakthrough achievement redefines expectations for comfort and form in smart eyewear, where most existing products remain bulky, ergonomically poor, and uncomfortable to wear for long periods.

IXI’s achievement results from a rigorous frame and fit research program that has been ongoing since 2021. The latest research phase focused on ergonomic testing in London and Finland over the past year, involving a diverse group of around 360 participants aged 20 to 70. In both this study and a follow-up round across the UK, France, Sweden, and Germany, IXI tested its own frame designs with participants who have varied sight-related issues, from reading to multifocal-glasses wearers.

Across the research, the data shed light on a consistent issue found in traditional and smart eyewear: wearers are forced to make significant compromises on optical ergonomics, leading to extreme strain in the eyes, neck, and posture. The research findings confirmed that IXI’s adaptive eyewear sets a completely new benchmark for comfort and fit in smart glasses.

The goal was never just to make something lighter — it was to make wearing glasses feel so effortless that you forget you’re even wearing them. We didn’t want to focus only on the weight, because that’s only one part of eyewear comfort and fit. We set out to build a frame fit architecture that would offer uncompromised fit for various face shapes.”

Timo Yliluoma, Chief Design Officer of IXI

The result is a true-fit frame architecture that sets a new standard for comfort and stability. IXI’s latest frame prototype enables precise adjustments at the temples and nose piece, along with adjustable pantoscopic tilt (a key angle that ensures the lens technology aligns naturally with the wearer’s eyes). All prototypes are already being produced using mass-production tooling, which demonstrates that high-volume production is fully achievable. The accomplishment unlocks enormous market potential for IXI by solving one of smart eyewear’s biggest design barriers: integrating advanced electronics without compromising comfort, fit, or wearability.

This isn’t just a design breakthrough, it changes how people buy eyewear. Traditionally, fit has dictated style: you start by finding what works for your face and only then choose from what’s available. IXI’s approach turns that model on its head. For the first time, people can choose the frame they want, knowing the right fit will follow. It marks a fundamental shift for the eyewear industry: from choosing what fits to expecting everything to fit.
