Design that sees ahead: Designing the future of eyewear with Timo Yliluoma

At IXI, design is at the heart of everything we do. It’s not something we add at the end — it guides how we solve problems, build technology, and shape the experience of wearing glasses.

For too long, eyeglasses have stayed the same. We believe it’s time for change. So we asked a simple but bold question: What if glasses could adjust automatically to where you’re looking? That idea set us on a path to rethink what vision correction can be—and design is what brings it to life.

IXI's design approach.

Great design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about purpose. A truly great product doesn’t just look good—it improves lives. It creates effortless, delightful experiences. It makes people smile. Our design process fuses art and science, technology and craft. Engineers, designers, and researchers work hand-in-hand, constantly experimenting, learning, and refining.

But at the core of everything is the people who wear glasses. We deeply involve eyeglass wearers in every stage, listening to their insights, needs, and experiences. Their feedback shapes every design choice we make. We invite them to imagine the perfect pair of glasses, designed to work as naturally as their eyes do—and then we get to work bringing that vision to life.

The role of aesthetics.

Aesthetics play a unique role in what we do. Eyewear is one of the most personal and intimate products a person can own: worn on the face day in and day out, shaping both appearance and how the world is seen. It’s a fashion statement even if you don’t want to make one.

Glasses are a fashion statement even if you don’t want to make one.

That’s why every detail matters. Every day, we refine shapes, select materials, and perfect the tiniest elements. Looks are important, but true excellence goes deeper—glasses should be effortless to wear, feel just right in the hand, and even sound right.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege to work on many great, award-winning products. What drives me most now is creating something entirely new — a fusion of fashion, optical innovation, and technology. A personal item that people can aspire to own, and one that meaningfully enhances daily life.

Because in the end, great design isn’t about the object itself—it’s about how it makes people feel. That’s the kind of impact we’re building toward at IXI.
